In an effort to shave a few grams of weight some manufactures use carbon fibre dropouts. Carbon is a great material but it doesn’t deal well with the compression force of the quick release skewer or the abrasiveness of the wheel’s locknuts. Often the dropouts will become ovalised leading to the wheel sitting crooked leading to poor shifting and tyre rub.
Stainless Steel Faceplates
We rebuild the dropout so the wheel sits correctly in the frame and add stainless steel plates to the wear surfaces. These plates prevent any future damage. On this Cannondale you can see where the rear hub has eaten into the frame.
Alignment is Critical
The hardest thing with dropouts, headtubes, bottom brackets, or suspension pivots is ensuring frame alignment. If these aren’t replaced EXACTLY in the correct planes then bike performance and rider comfort will be compromised and the frame won’t track straight. Our custom jigs allow us to ensure all dropouts are bonded correctly and usually to better tolerance than when the frame was new. I knew those years studying mechanical engineering would come in handy 🙂
